National Commission for Child Protection to assess the fulfillment of children's health is still very weak. One of the real evidence, the quality of children's health risk from secondhand smoke siege.

"I think it is let's save the children of the siege of cigarette smoke. They would have their health impaired. We have called stop smoking and not smoking in front of children," said Chairman of the National Commission for Child Protection Arist Merdeka Sirait in the office of Komnas PA, Jalan TB Simatupang , Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta, Monday (23/07/2012).

In commemoration of National Children's Day which falls on July 23, 2012, Arist invite active smokers not to smoke in front of children. He said that there are 89 million families in Indonesia are smokers. If there are children under the age of 3 years in 89 million homes that smoker, there are 89 children to secondhand smoke.

"That means there are 89 million children, aged 3 years was besieged by cigarette smoke. And that would interfere with his health. Because he will be a second-hand smoke," he explained.

According to Arist, the government should immediately issue a regulation on controlling the impact of the tobacco industry to ensure the health of children. Children's rights to health is still very minimal.

"Children have the right to receive adequate health care. So the government must guarantee that," he explained.

According to the UN agency for children's issues (UNICEF), the mortality rate of children / infants in Indonesia is still relatively high. Head of child survival and development of UNICEF, Dr Robin Nandy, in an official statement said today an estimated 150,000 children die in Indonesia every year before reaching their fifth birthday.
